I’ve been doing this work for over a decade; through the light and shadow we all meet along the way

Over the years my approach to the work has moved in various directions, to different rhythms. My interest in stories was a starting place for my therapeutic practice; I was fascinated by the narratives — often existing outside of our conscious awareness — that we tell ourselves about ourselves, our lives and the world around us. The cultural and personal myths that shape our sense of reality itself.

This led me to a particular interest in image, symbols and metaphor and their meaning as an internal language and way of experiencing the world.

But, let’s be honest, you don’t arrive at this work by accident. My path has been shaped by more than an academic curiosity, asking me to meet both the light and shadow in myself and in some of my closest relationships.

The longer I’ve sat in both chairs, the more I’ve come to trust the healing power of relationship in the therapy room — where something unnameable moves between the words, allowing relational wounds to be met, held, and gradually transformed.

Returning to the simple truth of two human beings meeting honestly in the room, I found a bridge between imaginal work and the felt experience of the body. Many people come to therapy overwhelmed by feelings – especially in a culture where bigger faster more is prized and that treats discomfort as something to fix or remove. I’ve learned that even the most difficult feelings can become gateways — opening into a fuller, more meaningful experience of life. Often, it’s by moving through what we fear most that we can move beyond.

I hold all of this with an awareness that not all of the challenges we face come solely from within. The very complex system of thoughts, emotions, personal history, relationships and mystery that we call “I” meets — sometimes violently — external realities; culture, economics and power structures in our families, communities and the wider world. We live in a field of contextual crossovers — we cannot exist outside of the soup.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase “each other”
doesn’t make any sense.
The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.”
