Ben Willens TherapyYour guide to a better mental space
“bad memories seem to have been erased, I feel confidence has replaced uncertainty, there’s nothing there except ease and light.
Where there once was continual discomfort, now I’m calm, comfortable and feeling generally good”

There are many different paths that lead people to seek therapy.
These are some of the most common…
I feel stuck and I need help to get moving again
I’m tired of all the highs and lows in my life
Sometimes I start spiraling down
I’m lost and looking for guidance – I want to find a new direction
I am completely overwhelmed – I don’t see that I have any options
Something huge has happened or is about to happen and I don’t know where I stand anymore
I feel like is something holding me back
A lot of stuff happened to me in my life and I need help to make sense of it and move on
Your guide to a better mental space
No matter how you found your way here the therapeutic process is very much a journey and it is a journey that no one else can make for you. You can certainly seek guidance from someone who is familiar with the landscape of the mind, who can help you to negotiate any obstacles you may encounter along the way but you must decide the ultimate destination and set the pace that is right for you. This journey is not always an easy one, there may be places to visit that you have been avoiding for years and you may be called upon to confront things that you would rather avoid. This is part of the journey and you may find that you are stronger than you believe. If this journey is undertaken with an open heart it can be a truly transformational adventure.
Meeting you where you are
Everyone has their own starting point, perhaps your journey begins by finding a safe place before you even consider where you want to go, or by taking an honest look at where you really are now. The path you will be called upon to walk is yours and yours alone. I will not attempt to prescribe a generic way out of your issues that has nothing to do with your personal situation, nor will I guide you onto a path that is not truly yours but fits into a prescriptive therapeutic methodology. The path that is right for you is a path of truth, your truth. I do not know how long it will be and I will not walk it for you. What I will do is guide you where ever I can and if necessary challenge you to continue when things are hard.
Will you say yes to the adventure?
This work is not about sticking your head in the sand and a denial of reality, this is about finding your truth and following your true path. Sometimes straight talking will be the best way forward.
The question that remains is are you going to say yes to the adventure? The adventure of being truly alive.
Why choose me as your therapist?
People will tell you that the most important element in choosing a therapist is the connection between you and them. Whilst this should play a part in the decision I think that having an understanding of the central principles underpinning your therapists approach is pretty important too. Without this you may end up going down a path towards somewhere that you don’t want to go, albeit hopefully with good company. Your therapist should be able to explain these in a way that is easy for you to understand, without resorting to jargon or fobbing you off.
The following principles are the foundations of the work I do. They may be a reason to work with me, they may also be a reason not to work with me. I’ll leave it for you to decide.

I work with the unconscious mind
For most of the problems that people bring to me the problem emerges from the part of the mind that is outside of their conscious awareness. This is not the park that uses logic and language. The problem emerges form the part from the part of the mind that is more concerned with images and stories.
My clients are all intelligent and creative people, if they could have thought their way out of their problem (with the information and resourses available) they would have done already. I work with the part of the mind that creates the problem in the first place, that’s why using metaphor and stories work much better than just talking.
This is truly modern therapy
Whilst the foundations of the work are fundamentally the same paths that people have walked for thousands of years, I take a modern approach, using cutting edge techniques help you to explore your consciousness.
I understand the pressures of modern life and my approach is flexible to fit around this. Ultimately you will be in control of the direction we take and you set the pace.
This is not an excuse to be uncomitted to the work. If you really want change then thr process will demand commitment from you but I will treat you like an adult.
I treat everyone as an individual
Whilst there are many things that unite us in being human, every (consciousness) mind is different and unique. There is no right and wrong there is only what you do and if that works for you (and the other people around you).
It is very important to my work to always treat people with respect.
The work we do will be bespoke to you, I will not try to shoe horn you or your problems into a pre conceived treatment plan or methodology.
My work is change focussed
I am predominantly concerned with therapeutic change. I aim to help you to get the the place you want be.
This varies from other practitioners who are more focussed on care and support. I do care and I think my clients feel supported but it is not my primary focus.
This gives the work a natural direcytion and avoids it being open ended.
I am directive
What this means is that I will play an active role in guiding where we go in the session. I will say what I think.
This doesn’t mean that I give my clients advise on how to solve their problems but I also won’t just sit there listening the whole time letting you talk and randomnly saying “how does that make you feel?”.
If I think that it will help the client I may use provocative techniques. This will always be underpinned by kindness, consideration and the clients best interests.
Many of my client say that they appreciate my straight forward and straight talking approach.
I work to brief therapy timescales
Due to the nature of the work the average number of sessions people see me for is 3-6 over a period of 1-3 months.
I occasionally work with people that need more support longer term but normally people do some work and then go out and live their lives, returning if something comes up in the future.
Many people report significant change after 1-3 sessions.

Bespoke Hypnotherapy Track
I make my clients bespoke hypnotherapy mp3’s to listen to at home, they help my clients to continue the change in between our sessions and are a powerful addition to the work the we do in the room.
I know where my problems come from...
Things have happened in my life that have lead to problems that I have now. I am looking for help to process these things and get past them
I am looking for help to change my behaviour...
I keep doing things that I regret afterwards. I know that there must be a reason I do this but I need some help to change.
I'm not sure why but something isn't right...
I have had an ok life but sometimes my feelings get out of control and I’d like to explore why and be able to do something about it.
